Living in Harmony with the Land

On 37 acres of untouched Texas land, we set out to build a dream from the ground up—just the two of us, with a shared vision and a commitment to sustainability. Over 8 years, we’ve built every structure ourselves, relying solely on creativity, resourcefulness, and countless hours of hands-on labor. Eugene, a mostly self-taught builder, creates unique designs using reclaimed lumber and materials, incorporating eco-friendly practices into every project.

As proud stewards of this land, we aim to live a life of low environmental impact, harvesting rainwater, and preserving the natural beauty that surrounds us. Together, as a husband-and-wife team, we are dedicated to sharing this land with others, offering a space that reflects our values of resilience, sustainability, and respect for nature.

Our Journey Captured on Film

Over the years, we’ve had the privilege of sharing our journey with others through these documentaries. We invite you to take a closer look at our life, values, and love for the land.

Building a home from scratch can be a daunting task, but for Marlena and Eugene, it was an adventure worth every challenge. With a passion for repurposing materials and a commitment to sustainability, they embarked on creating a unique home that reflects their love for nature and simplicity. Marlena and Eugene’s story began in 2016 when they met and quickly discovered a shared dream of living off the grid. Eugene, who was already living in a shack in the woods, inspired Marlena with his rustic lifestyle. Together, they decided to take on the challenge of building their own home, using materials they could find, repurpose, or trade.

Marlena and Eugene built their homestead in Blanco, Texas using salvaged windows, doors, wood flooring, tile, a bathtub, a lot of plywood, and some lumber. After over a decade of building, they now have a completely off-grid home, workshop, garden, and rental cabin.

By following these lives, the documentary offers a window into sustainable, eco-conscious lifestyles, showing how these individuals reduce their impact on the planet while embracing the natural beauty surrounding them. The scenes inspire viewers to reconnect with nature, perhaps even reconsider the comforts of city life, and find healing through the simple act of coexisting with the environment. In today’s episode, I interview Marlena Jarjoura, a self-made entrepreneur and founder of Hill Country Nature Retreat Center. Marlena shares her journey from teaching children to co-creating an off-grid oasis with her husband in the Texas Hill Country. They have built rental properties and a retreat center using reclaimed and recycled materials. You will gain insights into their financials and the work they have done to create their sustainable retreat center. If you have ever dreamt of having your own retreat center, this episode is a must-listen.

Experience Sustainable Living and Nature Conservation

Our retreat offers more than just a place to stay—it’s a journey into sustainable living and environmental stewardship. We’re proud to provide fresh, farm-to-table eggs for our Airbnb and Hipcamp guests, courtesy of the free-range hens we raise right here.

Dedicated to wildlife preservation, we actively participate in a wildlife management program, working to enhance the local habitat through preserving native vegetation, maintaining food and water sources, and creating wildlife corridors. These efforts support ecological balance and promote the well-being of the diverse species that call this land home.

Our commitment to the environment extends to our construction practices as well. We strive to retain the integrity of the natural landscape by minimizing tree clearing and using reclaimed lumber and materials in our structures. Each building tells a story, blending sustainably sourced materials with the landscape and creating a unique, eco-friendly experience.

For those interested in sustainable living, our event center is a gateway to exploring a self-sufficient lifestyle. We rely solely on harvested rainwater, with over 20,000 gallons stored on-site, and utilize composting toilets in our cabin and airstream, minimizing environmental impact and preserving resources.

At our retreat, we invite you to discover a harmonious balance with nature—a place where sustainability and natural beauty thrive together.
